Murphy and Read was established in 1917 by Alexander Murphy and John Read in Philadelphia. Started as a small service company specializing in locks, keys, and springs, Murphy and Read started to concentrate on manufacturing springs when Read's son-in-law Charles Seemuller took over the business. After World War II, Charles' son John made the first serious investments into modern manufacturing equipment.

In 1958 Murphy and Read moved to Palmyra, New Jersey. Since that move, there have been three major expansions at the Palmyra location. Today the plant, run by fourth generation owners Karl and John Seemuller, uses thoroughly modern technology in manufacturing, quality, and information systems.
